mayor vincent gray's attorney says his client may get indicted. if so, they're ready to go to

in bowie near enterprise road. at one point this is about what it looked like, every single lane shut down. right now the road is open. prince george's county fire department says the tanker was carrying a nontoxic substance and besides, it didn't leak. in jail tonight a tour bus driver said to be zooming along at speeds up to 70 miles an hour on a snow slick i-95. it turns out that was way too fast. that bus slid off the road and crashed on its side about 4:00 in the morning in stafford, virginia. we talked to some of those passengers. >> horrible, horrible. the bus just flipped over. guy was going way too fast. it hit the divider and flipped on its side. >> we was scared. everybody was scared and people screaming and i said jesus, jesus! >> a handful of passengers suffered serious injuries but are expected to recover.

that driver is charged with reckless driving for going too fast on a slick highway. the bus was operated by princess tours carrying 58 passengers from new york to atlanta. tonight the attorney for d.c. mayor vincent gray concedes his client is likely on the verge of getting indicted. robert bennett says gray is not guilty and is looking forward to his day in court. >> our bruce johnson sat down with him. >> in his first extensive comments noted d.c. attorney robert bennett conceded that his client mayor vincent gray could officially be indicted. he says if that does happen, he's going to ask the judge for a speedy trial. >> he's presumed to be innocent. this is the united states of america. in the event -- and i hope it doesn't come to this -- that he's charged, i'm going to ask the judge for an immediate trial so that we can clear his

name before the november election. >> attorney robert bennett says he conducted his own investigation and concluded there is no case that mayor gray knew and participated in the shadow campaign as alleged by businessman jeffrey thompson. >> i think i can go so far as to say that thompson said that he wanted to support the mayor, but he was very fearful of fenty. he was really playing both sides because he was made improper campaign contributions to mr. fenty and that he didn't want peoplenning it. >> businessman jeff -- people knowing it. >> businessman jeff thompson pleaded guilty to two conspiracy charges last week. he said mayor gray knew about the shadow campaign in which thompson spent more than $600,000 of his own money to help gray get elected. gray says thompson is lying. his attorney said as much again today. >> the mayor didn't know the

mechanics of what he was -- and there were a half a dozen ways and we're going to show this that jeff thompson could have kept his name out of it and legally and properly made contributions to the mayor. the mayor did not know this shadow campaign thing, i don't know where this thing -- the mayor, i categorically say to you the mayor did not know there was a shadow campaign if what's meant that, that illegal campaign contributions would be made for him. >> thompson tells prosecutors that that shadow campaign was actually hatched in a private meeting he had with vernon hawkins and jeanne clarke harris, two people who have already pled guilty in the case. here's what the mayor's attorney had to say about those two. >> and you name two people who don't make the assumption that they have a lot of evidence against the mayor because i know pretty much what boat of them will say and -- both of them will say and what they will not say and i don't think

trying to go to canada to fly to syria to join a terrorist group. investigators have been saying for days that someone flew the missing malaysian flight 370 off course. the case focuses primarily on the pilot and copilot. the new york times reported tonight a computer sent the missing plane off the flight path and was likely programmed by someone in the cockpit who had direct knowledge of that plane's systems. the ceo of malaysia airline says the copilot of missing flight 370 told ground control all right, good night. around that time the transponder was shut off. >> it really seems somebody took control of this aircraft and flew it for some time after the communications systems were turned off. >> a timeline of when a 2nd communication system is disabled is still unclear. >> we don't know when it was switched off after that.

>> malaysian police went to the pilots' homes off the weekend and removed a flight simulator from the pilot's house. investigators are digging into the backgrounds of the crew members and passengers. a satellite picked up a signal from the plane about 7 1/2 hours after takeoff. investigators used that to identify two possible routes, one stretching south through indonesia over the indian ocean, the other through 11 countries from thailand to the border of kazakhstan. >> these are countries that have a sensitivity of people unidentified flying over their airspace. >> that leaves the southern arc the most likely and lots of ocean to search. the uss kidd wrapped up its search off the west coast of malaysia. the u.s. navy is still supporting the effort in the indian ocean with surveillance aircraft. the man alexandria police want to question in the city's three unsolved murders will remain behind bars in west virginia. today a judge in wheeling, west

virginia, ruled charles severance can be held without bond. he was arrested last week on felony firearms warrants out of loudoun county. investigators told the judge todashev's is being investigated -- oçe/judge today severance is being investigated for the three murders in alexandria. >> mr. severance is a danger to the public and a flight risk. he's being investigated by authorities in alexandria, virginia, regarding three homicides. >> the defense attorney says his client will fight extradition to virginia. there is a battle between old and new and one d.c. neighborhood. there's a 100-year-old house purchased in the chevy chase neighborhood which could soon be a thing of the past in more ways than one. >> mola lenghi stopped by the neighborhood today to find out why so many folks are passionate about saving that house from redevelopment. >> we called the new owner of the property several times

today, didn't hear back. tonight we talked to the neighbors who might form an llc to buy the house, restore it and put it on the market. they tell me they've assured the owner he would not only get his money back but actually profit from the resale, but right now it looks like the house is on track to be history. >> sure, looks bad. we all look bad when we get older. >> reporter: 3823 morrison street northwest is a shell of what it once was and according to some, what it still could be. look no further than its twin sister right next-door. >> right over here next-door was not in very good condition several years ago and it's now a gem. it's truly beautiful. >> reporter: in november the new owner of this home and known developer who did not respond to our interview requests filed for and received a raze permit from the district

to tear it down and build a 5,500 square foot house in place of this 3,000 square foot house built back in 1907. >> he doesn't understand what it actually means to the neighborhood. >> reporter: it would not be the first home in the chevy chase neighborhood he's redeveloped, but this time nearly 140 neighbors responded by signing a petition hoping to convince the new owner to restore the house or sell it to someone who will. is that rather than completely ripping it down and throwing up something that in my opinion is completely out of character for the neighborhood. >> many of us come and live in a community such as this because there is a harmony to the houses around. >> reporter: houses with 100- year-old bricks and quality oak wood. the preservation specialist steven ortada says it's not simply about saving a house from a bygone era. >> it represents craftsmanship and value. there's value in that house, all the parts and materials in there. >> reporter: that all make up a house they say with a lot of

life left. >> once this is lost it's just something different. it won't be this. they could never replicate this. >> reporter: there are currently no historic designations to the neighborhood, subsequently the house, so no protections from redevelopment. the d.c. historic preservation office says they're seeing more and more of this, that slowly but surely the district is seeing a lot of their older homes go away and with that the character of some of their neighborhoods. the counter argument is the new development means progress and it will come new life in the neighborhoods will also come. the owners can do whatever they want with their properties. your elderly parents could be targets, even you could be a target. >> thieves chipping away at your life savings through a convincing mail fraud scheme, cong up how to
